The fabulous coastline around the traditional Tonnara Foderà di Magazzinazzi is one of the most beautiful of western Sicily, stretching for kilometres with myriads of coves, sea stacks and grottoes carved in the hard limestone cliffs.
Built by the Foderà Family in the early 1900s and situated just a few meters away from the sea, this monumental settlement is named after one of the valleys close to the picturesque town of Castellammare del Golfo, a fishing village popular for series of delightful pebbly and sandy beaches with transparent turquoise water, as lovely as you can find in the Mediterranean. The Foderà Family has owned the Tonnara di Magazzinazzi for generations, along with many other tuna plants in western Sicily (including the Tonnara of Scopello) and other fishing settlements in Libia.

The elegant Manor House is spread over two levels and includes the old sighting tower, which was used in the past to watch all the other Tonnare nearby.

Description

The mansion has its original room disposition unaltered, with the hall, living rooms and bedrooms situated on the first floor, which is accessed by an internal staircase.
The lower floor, originally used as boat storage, still has some perfectly kept fishing nets on display.
The ample and exquisite first floor is divided into two wings. Moving through to the right wing, one comes to a series of impressive living areas furnished with long tables and sideboards. From the living areas, one enters the exquisitely furnished sea-front sitting rooms, which ensure ample possibilities for repose and relaxation.
Moving through the left wing, one comes to four bedrooms (two overlook the sea and two with views over the private garden) and two bathrooms (with tub).

Outside, the Manor House is surrounded by a lush private garden filled with colourful oleanders, bougainvillea and other Mediterranean plants.
The crystal clear waters and wonderful sandy beach start where the garden ends, just two quick steps away out of the back gate. As the gate swings open, there you are, standing on a fantastic sandy beach and ready to plunge into turquoise crystal clear waters.

Besides the 1900s Manor House, the historic estates of the Tonnara Foderà di Magazzinazzi include the original private chapel set nearby the warehouses, where fishermen used to keep the ancient boats, nets and traditional fishing gear which are still there perfectly intact on display.
The old and brutal Sicilian tuna fishing procedure known as Mattanza (tuna cull) was performed by fishermen in the water right in front of the estate until late 60s.
